Introduction
Materials Science and Engineering major, the former major of “Radio Physics and Materials" which was established in 1960, is one of the earliest undergraduate majors focusing on teaching and research of electronic materials and components offered in China. It was granted the right to confer master's degree in “Electronic Materials and Components” in 1990, the right to confer doctorate’s degree in “Materials Physics and Chemistry”(sub-discipline) in 2006, and the right to confer doctorate’s degree in “Materials Science and Engineering” (first-level discipline) in 2018.
Disciplinary research aims at meeting the major strategic needs of the country and promoting local economic development, involves four main research directions: energy materials and applications, optoelectronic materials and devices, intelligent materials and applications, and nanoelectrochemistry and applications. It has a number of research and teaching platforms such as provincial engineering and technology center and provincial experimental teaching demonstration center with the total value of its instrument and equipment exceeding RMB 40 million, which strongly supports the outstanding contribution of the discipline in scientific research, talent cultivation and community service. The discipline has undertaken national scientific projects such as “863” and “973” by virtue of the University’s advantages in the field of electronics and information with scientific research funds exceeding RMB 40 million over the past five years. It has won Second National Prize for Progress in Science and Technology once and First Prize for Progress in Science and Technology at provincial and ministerial level for three times by virtue of its achievements. Some of its achievements have been applied on a large scale to SASAC enterprises in Shaanxi Province with conomic benefits exceeding RMB 400 million. Those enterprises that have promoted the technology have won the Golden Bridge Award for National Science and Technology Market.
An internationally competitive academic team made up of 66 full-time teachers has been established for this discipline including 8 professors and 28 associate professors (47% with overseas education background), especially national award winners and chair professors in “Chang Jiang Scholars Program” launched by Ministry of Education. This team has participated in the Youth Project of “Talents Program” in Shaanxi Province etc.
Graduates of this discipline are engaged in design, research, development and management of Materials Science and Engineering and related fields in universities, research institutes and production entities with employment rate of 100% for successive years and have been unanimously praised by the employers.
Training Objectives
1. To cultivate socialist builders who love their motherland, observe disciplines and laws, advocate science and abide by academic ethics, with the spirit of professional dedication and innovation in pursuit of truth, scientific and rigorous and realistic learning attitude and work style, and strong sense of social responsibility.
2. To enable the students to acquire proficiency in solid and broad basic theory and systematic and in-depth expertise in the field of Materials Science and Engineering, grasp international frontier related information, undertake scientific research or engage in special technical work independently, and be brave enough to explore and able to achieve creative results in the field of science or technology.
3. To enable students to acquire proficiency in a foreign language and be able to read foreign language materials of this discipline with professional writing and academic communication skills.
4. To enable students to acquire good humanistic quality and be good at communication and cooperation.
5. To ensure that the students are in both physical and mental health with good physical and psychological quality to undertake various professional work in this discipline.
Educational system:
The length of schooling for doctoral students is 4 years. The length of schooling for doctoral students admitted by general examination and MBA-DBA students who have obtained doctoral degree in the sixth semester is 3 to 6 years (the longest length of schooling for on-the-job doctoral students is 7 years). The length of schooling for MBA-DBA students who have obtained doctoral degree in the third to fifth semester (calculated from the admission of master's degree) is 5 to 7 years.
